Common questions about dropshipping margins, fees, ROI, and ad budgets.
Most dropshippers aim for a net profit margin of 15% to 25% per order. Margins below 10% are risky once refunds, ad cost spikes, and chargebacks are factored in. High-ticket dropshipping stores often target 20% to 30%, while general low-ticket stores typically run 10% to 20% net.
Add up four cost layers per order: supplier cost, shipping you pay, marketplace or platform fees (a percent of the sale plus a flat fee), and payment processing (typically 2.9% + $0.30). Subtract that total plus your customer acquisition cost from the sale price to get net profit per unit.
Profit margin is net profit divided by selling price - it tells you what percent of revenue you keep. ROI (return on investment) is net profit divided by total cost - it tells you how much you earn per dollar invested. A 25% margin order can have a 50% or 200% ROI depending on how cheap your costs are.
A common rule is to keep customer acquisition cost (CAC) at or below one-third of selling price, leaving room for product cost, fees, and profit. New stores often spend more to acquire data, then optimize down. Always check that ad spend per acquisition still leaves a positive net profit per unit.
Yes. Selecting Shopify pre-fills the standard Shopify Payments rate (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction). The calculator does not include the monthly Shopify subscription, but you can enter that under Monthly fixed costs to see how many units you need to break even.
